A holiday weekend marked by violence left two New York Police Department (NYPD) officers injured, with four children among the victims in a Brooklyn mass shooting. This incident was part of a series of shootings that occurred nationwide during the Independence Day celebrations.
Coney Island Barbecue Shooting
In Brooklyn’s Coney Island neighborhood, eight individuals, including four children, were shot on Saturday night at a family barbecue. New York Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch provided details during a Sunday press conference stating that the shooting involved an unidentified man dressed in black—wearing a ski mask—who approached a courtyard fence and fired multiple rounds before escaping. Investigators found ten shell casings and recovered a firearm with an extended magazine at the scene.
Tisch mentioned that no argument or altercation was observable before the gunfire began. Authorities are investigating if the shooting is connected to a gang-related homicide on the same block earlier in the week. Of the victims, seven are expected to survive, while a 21-year-old woman remains in critical condition after being shot in the chest. The injured children are aged 6, 7, 12, and 14. As of Sunday morning, there were no arrests.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani expressed that the shooting is “heartbreaking” and emphasized that “there is no place for this kind of violence” in the city.
Incident in Crown Heights
In another Brooklyn incident, two NYPD officers were injured early Sunday in Crown Heights during a confrontation with an armed suspect. The officers involved were part of a July 4th violence-reduction deployment when they noticed the 18-year-old suspect carrying a firearm via surveillance video shortly after 4 a.m.
As the suspect approached an unmarked police vehicle, officers attempted contact, leading him to fire at the vehicle. Three officers responded by returning fire, according to Commissioner Tisch. The suspect was unharmed, arrested following a brief chase, and a 9 mm handgun was recovered from him.
Detective Robert Carroll was hit in the back of his ballistic vest and sustained bruising, while another officer received minor injuries to his face and shoulder. Both officers are expected to fully recover.
