Vice President JD Vance arrived in Switzerland early on a Sunday, preparing to initiate new talks with Iran. This move aligns with the Trump administration’s aim for a lasting agreement following a ceasefire that was recently established.
Vance landed just before 6 a.m. local time, joining White House representatives Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. Swiss officials noted that the Iranian team had also arrived, making their way to Bürgenstock for the discussions.
The talks, previously set for Friday, were delayed as announced by Switzerland’s foreign ministry. These discussions involve the U.S., Iran, Qatar, and Pakistan.
“The way that we’re going to do this, we’re going to have a principal level of political leadership at the top,” Vance stated before his departure from Joint Base Andrews.
Following a memorandum of understanding signed by Trump at the G7 summit, a framework for broader negotiations with Iran has been outlined, featuring a 60-day ceasefire period. Trump cautioned on Truth Social that U.S. could impose tolls in the Strait of Hormuz if negotiations do not yield a lasting result before the ceasefire ends.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi will partake in the talks, as confirmed by Axios. The focus of the negotiations centers on nuclear issues and the Lebanon ceasefire, with an aim for tangible advancements.
Vance, speaking from Joint Base Andrews, emphasized establishing the right framework for continuing talks. He expressed optimism about progress on nuclear concerns and the Lebanon ceasefire. Despite ongoing clashes between Israel and Hezbollah, conditions in Lebanon have shown improvement.
“Despite the headlines, things are actually getting better there,” Vance remarked.
To maintain the ceasefire, preventing further escalation is critical. Vance underlines the importance of stopping retaliatory actions to solidify the ceasefire.
Pakistan has indicated that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Army Chief Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir will engage in technical-level discussions in Switzerland. The goal remains to establish a groundwork for peace and stability in the region.
