Ukraine Unveils New Sea Drone: The MV11 ‘Drone Aircraft Carrier’

Ukraine’s Innovative Defense Strategy

Ukraine has introduced a groundbreaking sea drone, the MV11, capable of carrying and launching other uncrewed vehicles from open waters. This debut has earned it the nickname of the world’s first “drone aircraft carrier.”

Created by the Ukrainian start-up UFORCE, the MV11 was revealed during a parade featuring diverse drones in Kyiv, on Ukraine’s independence day. UFORCE’s CEO, Oleh Rohynskyi, expressed confidence that the MV11 will play a vital role in successful missions and in repelling adversaries.

Ukraine’s Naval Strategy

While Kyiv lacks large warships or a major navy, it has strategically employed long-range missiles, along with airborne and waterborne drones, to target Russian assets in the Black Sea. Sea drones are often used as kamikaze weapons, delivering impactful visual coverage as they strike Russian vessels. They can also conduct reconnaissance, identifying potential targets discreetly.

These drones travel low in the water, often merging with radar signatures, which complicates detection by Russian defenses. Following Ukraine’s drone success, Russia has invested in its fleet of Unscrewed Surface Vessels (USVs), establishing attack-focused units. Estonian intelligence has noted Russia’s expanded efforts across its naval fleets and the Caspian Flotilla.

UFORCE Innovations

UFORCE is renowned for the Magura collection of sea drones, primarily utilized by Ukraine’s GUR military intelligence. The SBU domestic agency prefers the SeaBaby USV design. During recent independence celebrations, nine Ukrainian USVs navigated the Dnieper River. A notable achievement involved a Magura USV, the first to destroy a flying target from an unmanned naval platform, shooting down a Russian Su-30 fighter jet in 2025.

The Magura MV11 represents the latest, and largest, among Magura drones. These models have undergone multiple upgrades, some equipped with machine guns and surface-to-air missiles. Rohynskyi highlighted its capabilities of transporting and launching other unmanned systems from afar, across various domains.

The MV11 can remain at sea for up to a week while transporting up to 2,200 kilograms of equipment. It can deploy 18 Sting interceptor drones, each featuring small explosive warheads, and includes a fixed camera for navigation.

Implications for Ukraine’s Defense

Though it may not drastically alter Ukraine’s existing drone strategies against Russian targets, the MV11 is a “useful addition” to those forces in the Black Sea, according to Steve Wright, a U.K.-based drone expert. This innovation allows for prolonged presence in specific areas, effectively denying enemy access proactively.

While the technology involved has been known for some time, assembling it within a single platform offers strategic advantages. NATO is monitoring Ukraine’s use of naval drones closely, having stated that lessons are being drawn from Ukraine’s practices. In July, Ukrainian experts briefed NATO officials on USV utilization in the Black Sea.

U.S.-based ReconCraft, specialists in operational vessels, will manufacture Magura USVs domestically, following a memorandum of understanding signed in Washington. Production sites include locations in Oregon and South Carolina.
