Beer has a rich history in the United States, dating back to colonial times. A new study highlights which states show the most interest in this beloved beverage.
Wisconsin Tops the List
According to Innerbody Research, Wisconsin is the top state for beer interest for the second consecutive year. The analysis used Google Trends data to rank states. The Midwest earned the nickname ‘America’s beer belt’ with Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Missouri all making the top 10. Every Midwestern state finished in the top 20.
“The Midwest is a region with a deep beer culture,” said Bart Watson, president of the Brewers Association, based in Colorado.
Wyoming followed Wisconsin in search-interest scores. Kansas, Nebraska, and Iowa rounded out the top five.
Pacific Coast Shows Less Interest
States on the Pacific coast showed lower beer-related search interest. Alaska, Washington, California, Oregon, and Hawaii ranked in the bottom 10.
Regional Brand Loyalty
Strong regional loyalty affects beer brand preferences. Jean-Pierre H. Dubé, a marketing professor at the University of Chicago, explained that historical entry advantages play a significant role.
“Miller dominates in Wisconsin due to being first to market, while Budweiser remains strong in St. Louis,” Dubé noted.
Samuel Adams started in Boston and became a successful craft brewer with national reach.
Popular Beer Brands
Michelob Ultra emerged as the most searched beer brand, topping the list in Alabama, Nevada, and Oklahoma.
“The variety of lower-calorie and lower-ABV beers adds to the appeal of beer,” Watson said, noting the popularity of light beers.
Stella Artois led in several states, including Arizona, Florida, and New York. Although considered premium in the U.S., it’s not viewed the same way in Belgium.
Influence of Early Exposure
Research shows that exposure to specific beers at the legal drinking age influences long-term preferences. Millennials in areas with fewer craft options tend to drink more national brands like Bud and Miller.
Changes in Top-Selling Beers
Michelob Ultra became the top-selling beer in the U.S., surpassing Bud Light and Modelo Especial.
Watson highlighted that sales and search data don’t always align, suggesting interest in new brands doesn’t equate to sales volume.
He added, “Beer should be enjoyed with friends and family, and discussions about preferences should remain light-hearted.”
