Ongoing Investigation
The U.S. Park Police have released CCTV footage and images as part of a continuing investigation into the “destruction of government property” near the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. The investigation commenced following an incident on June 19, captured at approximately 3:30 p.m., where an individual was seen kneeling beside the pool and reaching into the water. The agency, however, did not label this person as a suspect or disclose their gender.
The authorities are keen to identify this individual, urging anyone with relevant information to contact the U.S. Park Police Tip Line at [email protected] or (202) 379-4877.
“Anyone with information regarding the identity of this individual is asked to contact the United States Park Police Tip Line,” they stated.
This appeal is made during a time of increased security after claims by President Donald Trump regarding damage to the pool.
Trump’s Vandalism Claims
On Wednesday, President Trump expressed concerns, alleging that the Reflecting Pool was “gruesomely vandalized,” mentioning damage on the pool’s lining and chemical misuse. He later reassured supporters that the site had since been restored to its “perfect” state. The president claimed that those responsible were mostly caught and are facing prosecution. However, the released footage does not clearly show the type of damage the president reported, nor have officials publicly confirmed these specific claims regarding the extent or origin of damage.
Emergence of Pool Problems
This development follows controversy surrounding the Reflecting Pool shortly after its reopening, which took place after a swift renovation ordered by President Trump earlier in the year. Trump had called for resurfacing the pool in “American flag blue” due to its perceived neglect. Within days of completion, the pool experienced problems. Algae caused the water to turn green, and the blue coating began to peel in some areas.
While some have linked these issues to possible vandalism, the timing has been questioned, as the problems arose soon after reopening. Experts have suggested that multiple factors, including residual algae, water conditions, surface temperature, trapped moisture, and environmental stress, could contribute to algae growth and coating failure.
Increased Security Measures
Security enhancements around the Reflecting Pool have been implemented, including fencing and a stronger U.S. Park Police presence. The Interior Department communicated that these barriers were initially planned for Independence Day celebrations but were installed earlier due to concerns over further damage.
