Trump Faces GOP Resistance Over Attorney General Nominee

President Donald Trump is confronting Republican opposition over the confirmation of Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche. The delay in Blanche’s confirmation hearing is due to demands for concessions by key GOP members.

After the hearing was postponed, Trump criticized Senators John Cornyn of Texas and Thom Tillis of North Carolina. Both senators are crucial holdouts on the Senate Judiciary Committee. Trump has threatened to withdraw Blanche’s nomination until the senators leave office next year.

Todd Blanche is a STAR, and everyone knows it! He has the potential to go down as one of the Greatest Attorney Generals of All Time.

Although Trump withdrew support for Cornyn’s re-election by endorsing Ken Paxton, Tillis decided to retire last year. Cornyn remains focused on seeking written proposals to alter the agreement made between the IRS and Trump’s family.

Trump’s threat was addressed by Cornyn, who said concerns about the tax settlement’s details extend beyond himself and Tillis. The Senate Judiciary Committee, led by Chuck Grassley, postponed the hearing due to their lack of support.

  • Negotiations over the issues are ongoing.
  • Republicans are demanding changes to the $2 billion anti-weaponization fund.
  • They are seeking a rewrite of Trump’s audit immunity included in the settlement.

There is uncertainty around Blanche’s confirmation next year, as more Republican seats may be at risk than Democratic ones. Trump could keep Blanche as acting attorney general, following a precedent set by former President Joe Biden.
