Early Sunday morning, gunfire shattered the festivities at a homecoming weekend block party in Vienna, central Georgia, claiming the lives of two individuals and injuring 35 others. According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI), the incident occurred around 1:25 a.m. in the city located roughly 100 miles south of Atlanta.
The GBI stated that deputies from the Dooly County Sheriff’s Office were patrolling the event when shots rang out on the 900 block of Pine Street. A statement to Newsweek indicated that this event wasn’t associated with the local school district.
Dr. Sherrod Willaford, Superintendent of the Dooly County School System, expressed deep sorrow over the shooting. He extended condolences to the victims’ families, emphasizing that the district did not sponsor the event. This incident ranks among the deadliest this year in Georgia, highlighting ongoing struggles with gun violence at public gatherings.
The Gun Violence Archive defines a mass shooting as an incident where four or more people are shot, not including the shooter.
The deceased individuals were discovered on the 600 block of Pine Street and were declared dead on the scene. Their identities remain undisclosed as their bodies are transported to the GBI Medical Examiner’s Office for further examination.
Investigators have yet to determine a motive or provide details about potential suspects, and it remains unclear if multiple shooters were involved. Democratic state Representative Patty Stinson, whose district includes Dooly County, expressed her heartbreak over the violence, extending sympathy to families affected by the tragedy.
Homecoming Celebration Turns Deadly
The shooting disrupted a block party linked to Dooly County High School’s homecoming celebrations. Sheriff Craig Peavy reported that over 1,000 people attended the event, and at least 50 shots were fired. Deputies responded promptly, but the chaos resulted in additional injuries, including victims being struck by fleeing vehicles. Victims received treatment at multiple regional hospitals.
School District Response
The district has implemented enhanced safety measures ahead of school reopening and activated crisis support teams for affected students and staff. Willaford emphasized the priority of safety, acknowledging the emotional toll on the community. He urged the public to respect privacy and avoid sharing unverified information, recommending reliance on law enforcement and official communications. Families seeking support are encouraged to contact school counselors or principals.
Willaford stated, “We also encourage our community to check in with students, staff, parents, and neighbors throughout the coming week. A caring conversation, a listening ear, and continued support can make a meaningful difference.”
What’s Next
The GBI and Dooly County Sheriff’s Office continue to investigate the shooting. The GBI noted that the investigation is “active and ongoing” and requested any information be directed to its Regional Investigative Office in Perry. Upon completion, the case will be reviewed by the Cordele Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office for potential prosecution.
