An extensive eight-day search in a remote national park ended with sad news for a family searching for their loved one. Lily Hooper, an 18-year-old hiker from Oakdale, southwest of Sydney, was found dead in thick bushland, according to the latest reports from authorities.
Lily went missing on August 12 after setting out for a hike in Nattai National Park, located about 37 miles northwest of Mittagong, as reported by SBS News. Her car was discovered at the Bonnum Pic trailhead on the evening she disappeared.
The search concluded Thursday morning when the body of a woman was found in the bushland. While the body has yet to be formally identified, New South Wales Police believe it to be Hooper’s, promising a report for the coroner will be prepared soon.
A volunteer found the body at around 11:30 a.m. on Thursday. Initially, due to a communication breakdown, Lily’s family received incorrect information suggesting she had been found alive, said NSW Police Assistant Commissioner Joseph Cassar. He emphasized the emotional toll of losing a young family member, highlighting the urgency of clarifying the situation to the family.
The Australian Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese, even addressed the tragedy, describing it as an unspeakable loss, according to SBS News. Tributes were paid in Parliament, reflecting the nation’s mourning for Lily, who had much to offer the world.
Jim Hooper, Lily’s father, expressed gratitude toward the emergency workers for their dedicated efforts. He was forgiving of the communication error, appreciating their heartfelt efforts, as reported by 7NEWS Australia.
Nattai National Park is known for challenging hikes and vast bushland, as noted by the New South Wales National Parks and Wildlife Service. The agency warns hikers of potential hazards such as unstable cliff edges and limited cellphone coverage. Hikers are advised to carry Personal Locator Beacons for improved safety in remote areas.
Lily Hooper’s death is the latest tragic event in a series of fatal hiking incidents. Earlier this month, Jake Whisenant, a well-known rock climber, died in California’s Sierra Nevada. In June, another 18-year-old hiker succumbed to heat-related symptoms at Grand Canyon’s Bright Angel Trail.
