A suspected terrorist plot at a U.S.-operated military base highlights the increased risk to American facilities in the U.K. The threat stems from tensions linked to the ongoing conflict with Iran, according to a former British terrorism chief who spoke to Newsweek.
Counterterrorism detectives are investigating a possible connection to Iran after arresting five men near RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire. This site has hosted American bombers for decades, including during the military actions launched against Iran on February 28. Investigators seek to determine whether the plot was state-backed by Iran, as similar targets have been seen in the Middle East. Reports from August suggested that U.S. facilities in Europe could also be targeted.
Heightened Risk Due to Iran Conflict
Chris Phillips, former head of the U.K.’s National Counter Terrorism Security Office, stated that the threat level in the U.K. from terrorism remains high due to the Iran conflict. He stressed that even after military operations cease, threats will persist. Phillips expressed concern about the existence of capable bomb-makers and the ongoing risk they pose.
In response to inquiries about security threats to U.S. bases in the U.K., a U.S. Defense Department spokesperson stated, “U.S. European Command (US ECOM) remains vigilant and will take necessary actions to ensure the security of U.S. service members, civilians, contractors, and their families in Europe.”
Details of the Arrests
Gloucestershire police have detained five men, all U.K. nationals in their 20s, reportedly living in London suburbs. The suspects face accusations of explosives offenses and preparing acts of terrorism. British intelligence had previously suggested Iran utilized proxies for operations on British soil, alongside mentions of increased activities from hostile states.
Phillips pointed out the importance of establishing whether the plot was government-directed or inspired by external events. He doubted President Donald Trump’s claims of a long-term cooperation between the U.S. and the U.K. over this case, as the suspects seemingly were not under close surveillance.
Security increased around RAF Fairford days before the arrests, with concrete barriers and trucks reinforcing the perimeter. However, arrests were sparked by a local farmer’s report of suspicious activity by a group of hooded men. This encounter and her subsequent call to emergency services thwarted their apparent plans.
U.S. Military Presence in the U.K.
RAF Fairford, home to the U.S. 501st Combat Support Wing and the 420th Air Base Squadron, is located near Swindon, about 100 miles west of London. Although the U.K. did not formally join military actions against Iran, U.S. bases in the country have been approved for defensive operations against Iranian threats. U.S. forces also operate from other RAF facilities like RAF Lakenheath and Mildenhall. Following recent events, the Department of Defense raised threat alerts at these locations, though specifics of these measures remain confidential.
The collaborative monitoring between U.S. and U.K. authorities aims to minimize risks and ensure safety for personnel, their families, and local communities.
