Susie Wiles Shares Her Journey to Being Cancer-Free

Susie Wiles, serving as the White House chief of staff, has announced her victory over an aggressive form of breast cancer. At age 69, Wiles became the first woman in this position in January 2025. Her diagnosis in March 2026 led to six months of treatment. Recently, she shared with pride on social media that her pathology results from the Mayo Clinic confirmed she is cancer-free.

Wiles had no warning signs leading up to her diagnosis. She went for her annual checkup, and though she wasn’t scheduled for a mammogram for several months, the machine was available at her appointment. Encouraged by her doctor, who understood her demanding work schedule, she agreed to proceed with the scan. This decision revealed her early-stage aggressive breast cancer, underscoring the importance of early detection.

The emotional and mental strains of cancer were profound for Wiles, who didn’t shy away from acknowledging the challenges. Despite the brutal nature of the disease, she found solace in the support from her medical team, family, friends, colleagues, and faith. She emphasized how these external supports helped carry the weight of her illness.

Her pursuit of purpose through continued work and service to the country kept her grounded. Wiles highlighted that the cancer experience can make life feel narrowly focused, but maintaining a sense of identity beyond the disease was pivotal in her recovery process.

With her health restored, Wiles is committed to adopting healthier habits, including clean eating, adequate sleep, and regular exercise. These proactive efforts aim to minimize the risk of recurrence.

Wiles urges others to prioritize health and routine screenings, reflecting on her own fortune in early discovery. She advocates for accepting help during challenging times and trusting in medical professionals and personal faith.

Having battled cancer, Wiles appreciates everyday moments more deeply now, emphasizing that her core roles as a professional and family member remain unchanged.
