The UnPopulist, an independent outlet committed to defending liberal democracy, reports on a significant shift among Kamala Harris supporters. The Institute for the Study of Modern Authoritarianism (ISMA) has conducted a new populism survey showing notable changes.
According to the recent survey, voters who backed Harris for president have shown increased cynicism toward American elites since 2024. The previous survey by ISMA in August 2024 revealed that 59% of those planning to vote for Harris strongly believed that at least one of six American elites had caused harm to people like them due to the elite’s “own selfish interests.” By June this year, this number rose to 69% among those who claimed to have voted for her.
This 10-point increase marks the only statistically significant change in the populist attitudes tracked by the survey. The survey aims to monitor various aspects of populism and voter sentiment, providing insights into public opinion regarding political leaders and potential authoritarian tendencies.
