Strath Haven High School’s $76 Million Renovation to Include Universal Bathrooms

Strath Haven High School in Pennsylvania is undergoing a major renovation project estimated to cost around $76 million. A significant part of this renovation involves the construction of gender-neutral bathroom facilities. Architectural plans were presented to the Wallingford-Swarthmore School District’s board, showcasing the inclusion of ‘universal toilet rooms’ on each floor of the building.

The new bathroom layout will feature individual stalls and shared sink areas. This initiative aims to replace existing gendered bathrooms with more inclusive facilities, promoting student privacy and safety. The Panther Press, the student newspaper, detailed these developments and emphasized the school’s commitment to enhancing the overall facility.

Architect Mike Kelly of Kelly Clough Baker and Associates is responsible for the design. He highlighted the advantages of these improvements, focusing particularly on supervision and security. The new bathroom design allows for security cameras to cover entry and exit points, with stalls fully enclosed for privacy. This setup aims to reduce behavioral issues within bathroom areas.

A spokesperson from the Wallingford-Swarthmore School District confirmed the plans to Fox News Digital. They explained that the design decision aligns with trends observed in numerous middle and high schools aiming to foster a safe and private environment.

Each toilet room will have floor-to-ceiling walls and doors, offering heightened privacy. These rooms will also include vape detection technology and fire alarms. Traditional restroom layouts will remain in some parts of the school, accommodating varying needs and preferences.

The school board has approved a project budget of $70 million for these renovations. Additional funding will be directed towards infrastructure upgrades. The district has made the schematic design presentation publicly available for transparency regarding costs and budget distribution.
