Sheriff Shares Updates in Suspected Abduction of Nancy Guthrie

Tucson, Ariz. — The investigation into the suspected abduction of Nancy Guthrie, mother of “Today” co-host Savannah Guthrie, marks six months since her disappearance on February 1. Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos has shared updates about the case, including the release of two notes that may have been sent by Guthrie’s kidnappers.

Investigation Progress

The investigation is ongoing, with detectives reviewing tens of thousands of videos for clues. Sheriff Nanos remains optimistic, emphasizing that the leads are not dried up and that a cold case unit is available if needed.

Google and other major companies are assisting by recovering important imagery. Google’s assistance led to the development of a photo believed to be the suspect, creating a critical piece of evidence.

FBI Cooperation

Nanos has addressed criticism of the FBI’s cooperation with his office, highlighting the collaboration between sheriff’s detectives and the FBI’s violent crime task force. Both local and federal agents have been working closely since day one of the investigation.

DNA Evidence

A DNA profile could not be obtained from a hair sample found at the scene, but advances in technology may provide new leads from other evidence. The hair remains available for comparison if a suspect is identified.

Investigative Approach

The sheriff stated that no one is permanently ruled out as a suspect. New evidence may refocus the investigation on individuals previously cleared.

Public Assistance

Authorities are seeking public help to identify the suspect seen in Guthrie’s Nest doorbell video. Investigators believe someone might recognize the linguistic style of the notes supposedly sent by the abductors.

To provide information, individuals can call 1-800-CALL-FBI or 520-88-CRIME anonymously. Over $1.2 million in rewards remain unclaimed in the case.
