Colombian superstar Shakira announced her commitment to reconstruct at least 10 schools and restore a local university in the aftermath of a devastating earthquake in Colombia. The quake impacted the western region, causing extensive damage to educational institutions and resulting in significant casualties.
During a surprise visit to Quibdó, the capital of Chocó province, Shakira assessed the destruction firsthand. She engaged with students, offering support and taking photos. “What concerns me is that schools must be rebuilt post-emergency,” Shakira emphasized. “Each day without school is a lost opportunity for these children’s futures.”
Howard Buffett, philanthropist and son of Warren Buffett, accompanied Shakira. He has collaborated with her in establishing schools previously. The Howard G. Buffett Foundation will partner with Shakira’s Fundación Pies Descalzos to reconstruct the schools. “When she calls, I come,” Buffett declared.
Shakira also revealed her intention to personally contribute to the rebuilding of a technological university in Chocó. Financial support includes $500,000 each from the FIFA Global Citizen Education Fund and Live Nation, along with $250,000 from the CAF Development Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean.
The earthquake, registering at 7.4 magnitude on August 10, took the lives of at least 287 individuals and destroyed over 26,000 residences. In Chocó alone, approximately 3,100 homes were ruined and more than 265 educational facilities were affected. The region, primarily inhabited by Indigenous and Afro-Colombian communities, faces communication challenges and limited infrastructure.
Shakira’s foundation has operated in Chocó for over two decades, overseeing two schools and achieving numerous student graduations. “I want to see the area rebuilt,” she stated, expressing heartfelt dedication to the community.
Chocó’s impoverished population lacks substantial infrastructure, compounding the current crisis. While aid distribution remains challenging, Shakira’s commitment symbolizes hope for recovery. “Though solutions aren’t instant, the commitment to help Chocó stands firm,” Shakira assured during her visit.
The Grammy winner, renowned for hits like “Whenever, Wherever” and her FIFA World Cup anthem, supports educational access extensively. Recently, she led the World Cup halftime show and performed in Brazil.
In light of Venezuela’s twin earthquakes, Shakira announced contributions from the FIFA Global Citizen Education Fund for educational revival. Her latest efforts echo numerous commitments from LatAm artists, including Marc Anthony and Karol G, contributing to regional relief endeavors.
