Isaias Causes Damage in the Southeast
Hurricane Isaias left a trail of severe damage in the Southeast. Over 438,000 residents in Florida lost power. One fatality was confirmed in Mobile, Alabama, due to storm-related incidents. Michael Estime, a meteorologist from Fox Weather, highlighted cleanup challenges in the area. Local resident Kristin Scheurer shared accounts of flooding and downed power lines.
Exploiting Chaos in Florida
Three individuals were arrested in Florida following the hurricane. They allegedly took advantage of the chaos to commit crimes. Sheriff Chip Simmons of Escambia County reported about Dustin Kelley, 30, and Amanda Carr, 29. They approached a woman under the pretense of needing to charge a phone. After gaining her trust, they stole the woman’s car. Law enforcement officers quickly responded, and this led to a car chase. The chase ended with no serious injuries.
Simmons stated, “These two individuals pretended to need a phone charged and ended up stealing a car. Fortunately, they are now in custody.”
Kelley faces charges of larceny, fleeing or eluding police, and possession of marijuana. Carr also faces larceny charges.
Attempted Burglary During Power Outage
Another crime incident involved Van Gary Spikes Jr. He allegedly attempted to break into a 24-hour store during the power outage. A deputy witnessed this and intervened promptly. Spikes Jr. fled but was soon caught and arrested.
Charges against Spikes Jr. include possession of burglary tools, wearing a mask during a felony, attempted burglary during a state of emergency, loitering, and criminal mischief. These incidents illustrate the intensified law enforcement response following the hurricane.
