Actor Sebastian Stan recently defended the perceived “conservative” narrative of his newest film, “Fjord,” during an appearance on Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show.” He addressed these views while discussing the movie with host Michael Kosta.
“Fjord” tells the story of a Romanian-Norwegian Christian couple, portrayed by Stan and actress Renate Reinsve. They move to a Norwegian village, where they face suspicion of child abuse from a society viewed as progressive. Their struggle involves proving their parenting methods to regain custody of their children.
Host Michael Kosta suggested the film could be seen as conservative, considering its portrayal of a religious family resisting a progressive European country. Stan acknowledged this characterization but argued that it should not overshadow the film’s core issues.
“Some might view the film’s themes as conservative. What’s your take?” Kosta asked.
Stan responded by saying it was a fair assessment but emphasized that it did not diminish the challenges faced by the family in the story. He advocated for open dialogue and understanding, questioning why “conservative” has become a negative label.
Despite not growing up in a religious household, Stan urged audiences to understand perspectives similar to those of his characters. He suggested giving families the benefit of the doubt when striving to stay together.
In another interview with USA Today, Stan addressed criticism of the film promoting a “right-wing ideology.” He described such labels as simplistic, pointing out the immigrant family’s experience in a foreign country. He drew parallels between the film’s setting and issues in the United States, criticizing divisive attitudes.
The film draws loose inspiration from a real-life case in 2015, involving a Norwegian couple whose children were removed from their custody due to abuse suspicions and religious background. After seven months of separation, the family reunited following multiple court cases.
Sebastian Stan, known for his role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, has also portrayed a young Donald Trump in the 2024 film “The Apprentice.” Despite previous criticism of Trump, Stan defended his decision to take the role.
In a comment to Entertainment Weekly, Stan discussed the importance of humanizing figures that elicit strong emotions, explaining that polarizing figures like Trump should be seen more objectively.
Fox News Digital attempted to contact Stan’s representatives for further comments.
NewsBusters managing editor Curtis Houck criticized Stan’s comments, highlighting the irony given Stan’s past role in “The Apprentice,” an anti-Trump film that received praise from liberal media.
