Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson defended her decision on Friday to replace the city’s police chief, describing it as the “right decision at the right time.” However, she did not provide specific reasons for the change in leadership.
The decision comes as police continue to investigate a fatal, gang-related shootout that took place at a food festival near the Space Needle last weekend. A 15-year-old was arrested at the scene and charged with assault, though charging documents indicate the gun he fired was not involved in the deaths of two bystanders.
Both Wilson and former Police Chief Shon Barnes faced criticism for delays in releasing critical information about the shootout, such as confirming whether suspects were at large. Barnes, who was the city’s second Black police chief, was recognized for improving officer recruitment and contributing to the reduction of crime in downtown Seattle.
Several community organizations, a prominent business group, and city council members criticized Wilson’s decision to replace Barnes. These groups had previously supported his efforts in the community.

At a news conference on Friday, Wilson spoke alongside Andre Sayles, a Seattle deputy chief appointed as the interim chief. She praised Barnes for his service and noted her position as mayor provided her with better insight into the operations of the Seattle Police Department than her critics might have.
Wilson stated that poor communication about the mass shooting at a major public event was not the sole reason for asking Barnes to resign. “There were multiple factors,” she remarked. “The events of Sunday played into it.”
Sayles announced plans to increase police presence at public festivals throughout the rest of the summer. He expressed confidence that investigators are nearing the arrest of additional suspects involved in the shootout.
The shooting took place during the Bite of Seattle festival, a popular three-day event that showcases food and retail vendors, as well as performers. Three people, including a suspect, died, and four others were injured. Among the injured was a 2-year-old boy.
