Seaplane’s Hard Landing in East River: Investigation Underway

A seaplane carrying several passengers made a hard landing in New York City’s East River. This incident occurred on Sunday, according to officials. The Fire Department of New York (FDNY) was alerted to a plane in distress at approximately 12:01 p.m. near the marina at East 23rd Street and the FDR Drive in Manhattan.

FDNY teams successfully removed at least eight individuals from the seaplane. Two of the passengers were assessed for minor injuries although one declined medical attention as reported by the NYPD. The seaplane, which had departed from the Hamptons earlier, was eventually spotted upright, being towed back to the dock.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced plans to investigate after the seaplane, identified as a Kodiak 100, experienced a hard landing in the East River near Brooklyn. This incident occurred around noon local time, leading to damage in the form of a snapped wing strut. A wing strut is a crucial component that connects the aircraft’s wing to the fuselage, providing essential support.

The FAA intends to release a preliminary accident report shortly. This marks the second seaplane incident in the East River within weeks. On June 13, another seaplane crashed near Whitestone, Queens. During that event, the FDNY assisted by bringing a pilot and a passenger onto a boat, though no injuries were recorded.
