Samsung’s Entry into AI-Powered Eyewear at the London Galaxy Unpacked Event

Introduction of AI Glasses

Samsung unveiled its AI-driven glasses during the Galaxy Unpacked event in London. This marks the company’s initial venture into wearable eyewear under its Galaxy brand. The event showcased two frame designs collaborated with Gentle Monster and Warby Parker. These designs are crafted to resemble regular glasses.

Design and Wearability

Reporters testing the frames before the event shared with Gizmodo that the glasses felt exceptionally light. The internal electronics seemed almost non-existent due to this lightweight design. At the media roundtable, James Choi, Samsung’s EVP and head of XR R&D, emphasized the importance of comfort for enduring wearability. He stated that style is secondary if the glasses are too heavy and distracting.

The Gentle Monster design highlights a sleek, minimal look with thin arms and a consistent black color. The frame has a flat top edge that gently curves downward. Warby Parker’s frame offers a warmer appearance with deep brown hues and a gentle upward curve along the brow.

Functionality and Features

The glasses focus mainly on audio features with a built-in camera. They don’t include a display, distinguishing them from designs like Meta’s Ray-Ban AI glasses. Interaction is primarily through voice, touch, and gestures related to a paired Galaxy Watch.

The Qualcomm Snapdragon AR1 Gen1 chip powers the device, ensuring efficient processing and heat management within its slim structure. Google Gemini serves as the AI engine. It provides real-time navigation, language translation, notification summaries, and location-based recommendations. The camera enables users to share live views in calls and to capture notes or translate sign text.

Sameer Samat, President of Android Ecosystem at Google, commented on the collaboration, emphasizing the blend of design with Gemini’s assistance. He mentioned the excitement in bringing this hands-free helper to users soon.

Battery Life and Launch Details

The glasses offer nine hours of battery life per charge, with a charging case allowing seven additional full charges. Pricing and release date details remain undisclosed, although a fall launch is confirmed. Rumors suggest a price range between $379 to $499.

With Meta Connect set for September 23, Samsung has a limited time to roll out its product first. A noteworthy aspect might be the distribution capabilities via Gentle Monster and Warby Parker’s retail networks.

Won-Joon Choi, Samsung’s MX COO, explained the ambition of integrating AI as a smooth part of daily life rather than disrupting activities. The quality of the frames is crucial to encourage use even when the AI isn’t actively engaged.
