Russia Launches Second Major Attack on Kyiv Ahead of NATO Summit

Ballistic missiles struck Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine, as Russia continued its assaults on the city. This attack marks the second major strike in less than a week. Reports confirmed at least seven fatalities, with many others injured. These strikes took place just before a NATO summit, indicating increased tensions.

President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine, scheduled to attend the NATO summit in Turkey, previously warned of Russia’s plans for a significant attack on Kyiv. Hours after his warning, explosions rocked the city. Authorities reported that ballistic missiles were in the air, and Mayor Vitali Klitschko urged residents to remain in shelters for safety.

Tymur Tkachenko, leading Kyiv’s military administration, confirmed the casualties and injuries. As dawn broke, the city’s skyline was filled with black smoke due to multiple fires and damaged buildings. Emergency services responded to the crisis, including rescuing trapped individuals.

Earlier, on Thursday, Kyiv endured a nearly 12-hour assault by missiles and drones, resulting in 31 deaths and over 100 injuries. This intensification in attacks comes as the NATO summit is set to begin in Ankara, Turkey. The meeting will focus heavily on the alliance’s strategy and response to the ongoing war in Ukraine.
