Royal Caribbean Scraps Costa Maya Stop: Passenger Reactions

Royal Caribbean’s decision to cancel a stop at Costa Maya from the Icon of the Seas itinerary generated mixed reactions among passengers. While some were disappointed, others welcomed the change, sparking a debate on the port’s appeal.

The cancellation occurred due to a maintenance issue, causing the ship to stay overnight in Miami. Originally scheduled to depart on Saturday, the ship remained in port until Sunday, impacting the itinerary.

Passengers received a notice explaining the change. The notice indicated that Sunday, Sept. 27, would be a sea day instead of the planned visit to Costa Maya, Mexico.

“Day 3 will now be a relaxing Sea Day in place of our visit to Costa Maya, Mexico.”

Fox News Digital reached out to Royal Caribbean Group for comment on the situation. The decision followed maintenance delays originally scheduled for the Icon of the Seas.

Compensation was offered to passengers in the form of onboard credit, with amounts reportedly starting at $300, varying by cabin type. This led to varied reactions among passengers.

One Reddit user remarked, “Just got this. $350 to miss the worst port of the itinerary made my day! Might go to the Supper Club with that, lol.” Another wrote, “Three hundred dollar credit, and you don’t have to go to Costa Maya? That’s a gigantic win.”

The strong opinions reflected in online comments raised questions about Costa Maya’s appeal. Travelers offered their take on the reasons for the mixed views.

Critics described the port as underdeveloped and lacking attractions, mentioning issues like seaweed and limited activities in the immediate area.

“It’s so [run-down], half empty, and smells,” shared one commenter.

However, some travelers were saddened by the change. Excursions like visits to the ancient ruins at Chacchoben, near Costa Maya, were anticipated by some passengers.

One traveler shared that their daughter was disappointed to miss the ruins excursion. Another expressed regret but was understanding of the change, mentioning they would manage without the planned tour.
