A recent poll by CNN indicates a notable shift in political identification among self-described Democrats and those who lean towards the Democratic Party. Around one-third of these individuals now consider themselves ‘democratic socialists.’ This shift highlights the growing influence of groups like the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) on the national stage.
The survey, conducted by SSRS in collaboration with CNN, revealed that 34% of Democrat-leaning respondents identified as democratic socialists. When considering all respondents, 15% labeled themselves as democratic socialists. This demographic largely consists of young White Americans, with 59% under the age of 45 and 57% identifying as White.
The increasing presence of socialism in U.S. politics is a subject of concern for many. The Democratic Socialists of America’s expanding influence is a particular point of interest. During recent primary elections, DSA-backed candidates found notable success, prompting discussions on the potential implications for future political landscapes.
“Americans have every reason to be concerned when one of the most influential forces inside today’s Democrat Party is pushing to abolish ICE, defund the police, and eliminate key institutions,” remarked Mike Marinella from the National Republican Congressional Committee.
Elections in major cities reflect this changing trend. In New York City, socialist Zohran Mamdani, supported by the DSA, secured the mayoral position. Similarly, Seattle elected Katie Wilson, a socialist Democrat, as mayor. On a federal level, DSA-backed candidates have experienced success in Democratic primaries across New York, Pennsylvania, and Colorado. Abdul El-Sayed, endorsed by the DSA, is leading the race for the Democratic U.S. Senate nomination in Michigan.
The Democratic Socialists of America advocate substantial changes in America’s governance. Their recent platform proposes the elimination of the U.S. Senate and the restructuring of the presidency and Supreme Court. These roles would instead become subordinate to Congress. Additional platform proposals include granting amnesty to immigrants, ending deportations, and allowing unrestricted migration between countries. They also aim to extend full voting rights to noncitizens and those with criminal convictions.
Controversially, the DSA’s platform calls for a 32-hour work week without reducing pay or benefits. It also supports Medicare-for-all, eliminating student loan debt, abolishing cash bail, and implementing universal rent control.
Spokespeople from the Republican Party expressed concerns about these policies, suggesting that the broad adoption of socialism could lead to significant political ramifications. Natalie Baldassarre from the Republican National Committee warned that such policies would negatively impact Democrats in upcoming elections, claiming Americans largely reject extreme socialist ideologies.
