Republicans Invest in Francesca Hong’s Primary Campaign

A super PAC associated with Republicans is reportedly allocating $2.2 million for television ads aimed at bolstering Francesca Hong’s chances in Wisconsin’s Democratic gubernatorial primary. Some Democrats in the state express concern that Hong, a democratic socialist with strong left-wing views, could win the primary and ultimately facilitate a Republican victory in the governor’s race.

The Republican strategy appears focused on painting Hong as excessively liberal, which they believe may appeal to Democratic primary voters. Right Direction Wisconsin, the PAC conducting these ads, is connected to the Republican Governors Association. The 30-second ad targets liberal areas such as Madison and Milwaukee, as part of a calculated effort to influence the primary outcome.

Similar tactics have been observed nationwide this year, with both parties attempting to sway the opposing party’s primaries by promoting candidates perceived as weaker general-election contenders.

Joe Zepecki, an independent Democratic strategist in Wisconsin, criticized the maneuver as a blatant interference in the democratic process. He urged all Democratic gubernatorial campaigns, including Hong’s, to denounce the Republicans’ actions as an attempt to manipulate voter decision-making.
