However, this can lead to disjointed systems and competing interfaces. “The more tools companies deploy, the harder it becomes for them to integrate and manage visibility across different platforms,” Lane explains. “Security should enable leaders to decipher critical information and take action before complexity hinders responsiveness.”

According to Lane, the industry is nearing a pivotal point. Cybersecurity assessments must now consider whether compromised information remains practically valuable post-breach. “Leaders need to ponder what happens after a breach,” Lane advises. “If attackers escape with data they can’t interpret or deploy, the situation shifts markedly.”

She urges executives to consider cyber resilience as a strategic business issue, since data compromise increasingly affects operational processes, reputation, regulatory compliance, and long-term growth.

Lane emphasizes a shift in evaluating cybersecurity. “Traditionally, we measure success by an attacker’s ability to penetrate a system,” she notes. “Future resilience depends on a more crucial factor: if a breach occurs, is the stolen data still valuable to the assailant? If not, we’ve transformed the cybercrime economy.”

As AI continues to reshape the landscape, Lane projects this challenge will dominate leadership discussions in the coming decade. Companies that rely solely on prevention may struggle against increasingly automated assaults, while those engineering systems where breached data lacks worth will redefine effective cyber resilience in the AI age.
