Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are reportedly preparing to move back to the United Kingdom with their two children. This marks six years since they stepped away from royal responsibilities and settled in California.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex plan to live in a private residence outside London. Their children, Prince Archie, 7, and Princess Lilibet, 5, will begin attending a British school this September.
Their decision was first reported by The Telegraph and The Sun.
King Charles III has been informed of their move and welcomes more private time with the Sussex family. Prince William and Kate Middleton are also aware of the relocation.
This move does not alter Harry and Meghan’s royal status; they will not resume duties as working royals. They intend to remain private individuals.
Meghan last visited the U.K. in September 2022 during Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral. The couple’s previous visit together was also for the same event.
In July, the family reunited with King Charles at Highgrove House in Gloucestershire. This was the first time Charles saw Archie and Lilibet in four years.
The couple left royal duties in 2020, later settling in Montecito, California. Their relationship with the royal family became strained after discussing grievances in public interviews, a Netflix series, and Harry’s memoir “Spare.”
Despite recurring desires to reconcile, Harry has faced security concerns, impacting his ability to bring his family to the U.K. The Duke lost a legal challenge in 2025 regarding police protection levels for his family in Britain.
Royal experts have noted that reconciliation does not necessarily equate to a return to royal duties. Kinsey Schofield mentioned, “There’s always room for Harry to support his family privately as a son and brother.”
