President Donald Trump praised the grocery chain Giant Eagle for its initiative to lower prices on over 300 products this summer. This decision comes amid rising costs for Americans, which poses a threat to Republicans in the upcoming midterms.
On his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump stated, “Wonderful news! I have just been informed that Giant Eagle, a GREAT American Grocery Company, will be lowering prices, by a lot, across more than 300 products this Summer, through Labor Day, to help hardworking American families.”
Trump also highlighted the efforts of retailers like Walmart, commending them for responding to his call to reduce costs for working families. On July 9, Giant Eagle began offering discounts on products such as meal essentials and snacks, with these offers lasting until September 9. Previously, Walmart and its subsidiary Sam’s Club had also announced similar price cuts nationwide as part of efforts to benefit customers during the summer season.
“Like Walmart, Giant Eagle is stepping up in a big and bold way,” Trump remarked, recognizing the grocery chain’s proactive response.
The Impact of the Iran Conflict on U.S. Inflation
Inflation was a pivotal topic in Trump’s 2024 presidential victory. He had promised to reduce living costs after prices rose under President Joe Biden in 2021 and 2022, driven by supply disruptions during the pandemic.
A CBS News exit poll following the 2024 presidential election revealed that 75% of voters found inflation to be difficult, with 45% reporting worse financial conditions compared to four years earlier. Of those dissatisfied with the economy, 69% indicated support for Trump.
In a campaign speech in Wisconsin in October 2024, Trump declared, “Starting on day one, we will end inflation and make America affordable again.”
Previously declining prices, including for gas, spiked again when the U.S. and Israel conducted joint military strikes on Iran in February. The subsequent disruption of the Strait of Hormuz and global oil supplies led to increased inflation rates in the U.S., with April experiencing a rapid inflation rise of 3.8%. By June, annual inflation had decreased to 3.5%, remaining higher than February’s Consumer Price Index of 2.5%.
As inflation climbed, Trump’s approval ratings fell, reaching a low of -20.2 in May, according to Nate Silver’s Silver Bulletin. While his popularity improved slightly after a ceasefire with Iran, it remains lower than levels during his first term.
Economic Concerns and GOP’s Midterm Risks
Current polling reflects significant public concern about rising costs and financial conditions. According to a July CNBC All-America Economic Survey, 61% express pessimism about the economy now and in the future, marking the highest level of concern since December 2023.
These apprehensions may result in unfavorable outcomes for Republicans in the November elections, particularly if the Trump administration fails to deliver the promised improvements in affordability.
Trump has urged U.S. grocery stores to follow Giant Eagle and Walmart in reducing prices, suggesting these measures could enhance his political standing with the public. He commented, “We will continue to bring Prices DOWN, as seen with Oil, Gas, Eggs, and Prescription Drugs, all of which are dropping FAST after the disaster we inherited from Sleepy Joe Biden.”
The president also encouraged other grocery chains to adopt similar actions immediately, calling those leading the efforts “absolute Patriots.”
