Democrats Consider Impeachment if They Win Congress
Ronna McDaniel, former RNC chairwoman, has discussed the possibility that Democrats might pursue a third impeachment of President Donald Trump. This consideration comes as they seek control of Congress and could impact political strategies and key races in the 2026 midterm elections. The conversation occurred on ‘Fox News Live.’
Longtime Rep. Al Green from Texas announced plans to force a vote for impeaching Trump due to incidents involving federal immigration officers that resulted in the deaths of two U.S. citizens earlier in the year. His introduction of a privileged resolution on the House floor aims to remove the president from office. This type of resolution allows lawmakers to compel the chamber to consider a bill within two legislative days. Consequently, House GOP leaders must hold a vote by Wednesday.
Implications for Political Parties
For Democrats seeking to reclaim the House and Senate in the November elections, the impending vote presents a complex situation. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries has consistently avoided the subject of impeachment, focusing instead on addressing issues such as high living costs, which are crucial for Americans.
In June 2025, Jeffries and 127 other House Democrats joined Republicans to suppress a previous impeachment effort led by Green. Having recently lost his primary to a younger Democrat advocating generational change, this might be Green’s last public opposition against Trump.
Public Demonstrations and Democrat Strategies
Green has been expelled from Trump’s addresses to Congress multiple times this term due to public outbursts. During the president’s first address following his return to the White House, Green disrupted proceedings by waving his cane and shouting. He held up a sign stating, ‘Black People Aren’t Apes’ at the State of the Union.
Democratic leaders are expected to initiate numerous investigations into Trump’s administration and inner circle, should they win the upcoming elections. Green, however, argues that there’s no need to delay impeachment. He has urged colleagues to hold a vote immediately, asking, ‘How many more lives must we lose, and how many more loved ones of victims have to plead for help before the self-evident evidence from videos and President Trump’s own words compel us to act?’ His letter conveys that available evidence shows Trump’s unfitness and the threat he poses to democracy.
The current impeachment resolution considers Trump ‘a great threat to democracy and the Constitution.’ It references the fatalities caused by federal immigration officers during a nationwide crackdown on illegal immigration.
