A pontoon boat tragically capsized near Alcatraz Island, leading to the death of one individual and leaving three others missing. The incident occurred on Tuesday, according to authorities.
Emergency teams managed to rescue 16 people from the water. Most of these individuals were family members participating in a memorial service. The boat had sunk almost completely, with its motor still operational and leaking fuel, as observed by the responding crews.
Among the affected, one person was retrieved from the cold water but unfortunately passed away later. A dog that was also on board died. Additionally, three individuals sustained injuries from the fall and are receiving hospital treatment.
Efforts to locate the missing people are underway on the western side of the Golden Gate Bridge. The search employs divers, helicopters, and boats, and officials have indicated these efforts will persist through the night.
Initially, authorities reported two individuals missing, but this figure was revised to three following witness reports. “We are fully committed to the rescue operations at this moment,” said San Francisco Fire Chief Dean Crispen.
The U.S. Coast Guard communicated via a post on X, confirming ongoing search and rescue operations. “Updates will be shared as additional information becomes available,” the post mentioned.
