The Pentagon has awarded Raytheon a substantial $6.3 billion contract to produce Standard Missile–3 Block IB (SM-3 Blk IB) interceptors over several years. This development is aimed at enhancing the military’s missile defense capabilities.
Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition and Sustainment, Michael P. Duffey, emphasized the strategic advantage of the SM-3 Blk IB interceptors, highlighting their operational superiority worldwide. “Our warfighters must never face a fair fight,” he stated, underscoring the missile’s effectiveness in various combat scenarios.
The SM-3 missiles are designed to counter short or medium-range ballistic missiles both at sea and on land. They have been instrumental for U.S. Navy destroyers, particularly in countering Iranian ballistic missiles. The SM-3 B variant, introduced in 2014, offers advanced targeting through a two-color infrared seeker and improved propulsion systems.
The contract, as outlined by the Pentagon, spans over five years with the possibility of extending for two additional years. It is expected to stabilize production, enhance supply chains, and boost capacity by directly supporting critical domestic suppliers.
This initiative addresses potential bottlenecks in sub-tier manufacturing, ensuring that defense forces have access to the required interceptors across multiple terrains, including air, sea, and land.
