An off-duty U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent was arrested following an incident in Fresno, California. The agent, identified as David Gonzalez, 32, from Texas, was shot by a 72-year-old man he allegedly attacked outside the man’s home.
Fresno Police Department reported that officers responded to the scene at approximately 3:20 a.m. on Friday. Multiple 911 calls alerted them to a gunshot in the area of East Dudley and North Broadway Street.
Upon arrival, officers discovered Gonzalez with a gunshot wound to his midsection, handcuffed by an off-duty police officer at the scene. Gonzalez, assigned to ICE, appeared intoxicated and agitated, according to witnesses.
Details of the Incident
The incident began when a woman found Gonzalez asleep on her front lawn. She informed her 72-year-old father, who then approached Gonzalez. Police stated Gonzalez became violent, attacking the elderly man and his daughter when she tried to intervene, causing both visible injuries.
Fearing for his and his daughter’s safety, the man fired one shot, injuring Gonzalez. He used a legally possessed firearm. Shortly after, the daughter’s boyfriend, an off-duty police officer, arrived and restrained Gonzalez.
Legal Proceedings and Investigation
Gonzalez was taken to a hospital for treatment. He is in custody, facing charges of battery likely to cause great bodily injury, felony vandalism, and battery.
The 72-year-old will not face any charges, with authorities confirming he acted within the law. Both ICE and Fresno Police Department are conducting investigations, with ICE officials in touch with local law enforcement.
