NYC Mayor Urges President Trump to Cease ICE Operations After Controversial Shooting

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has called on President Donald Trump to halt all Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) activities in the state. This demand follows an incident where a federal agent shot an undocumented immigrant in the Bronx, leading to protests and tensions with law enforcement.

During a late-night news conference, Mayor Mamdani condemned the shooting and revealed a lengthy discussion with Trump. He sought the release of the injured individual, although this attempt did not succeed. Mamdani criticized ICE, stating, “All they do is terrorize this city.”

Today’s shooting is only further devastating confirmation of what we have long known,” the mayor said. “ICE is rotten to its core,” he added.

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul also took part in discussions with President Trump and Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin. Via social media, she expressed her disapproval and called for the cessation of ICE activities in New York. Additionally, she demanded the release of body camera footage to ensure transparency.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) stated that ICE agents were executing an arrest for a wanted person from the Dominican Republic when an agent fired, injuring the suspect. The DHS has yet to disclose details of the incident’s cause.

The DHS added that the injured man, labeled as an illegal immigrant, had prior convictions for grand larceny and arrests involving assault, robbery, drug possession, and weapons possession. He was reportedly linked to the Trinitarios gang.

Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch identified the injured individual as a 28-year-old man, with an unhurt 5-year-old boy, believed to be his son, present during the shooting. Tisch noted that an ICE agent fired seven shots, hitting the man.

Demonstrators gathered outside NewYork-Presbyterian Allen Hospital, where the man was treated. They chanted slogans such as “ICE off our streets” and “No justice, no peace.” Confrontations occurred between police and protesters, leading to some arrests.
