New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced he has no plans to dismiss NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch, despite calls from democratic socialist allies for her removal. These demands followed an incident involving an ICE shooting in the Bronx.
At a ceremony honoring fallen NYPD officers, Mamdani addressed Tisch’s position. He stated, “Jessica Tisch is the police commissioner. I have no plans to change that.” He highlighted Tisch’s record of combating corruption within the NYPD and success in reducing crime across the city. In the last ten months, the lowest recorded numbers for murders and shootings have been achieved.
MAMDANI FLEXES GROWING POLITICAL MUSCLE
Criticism arose after the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) called for Tisch’s removal following the ICE shooting of Oscar Belgal during a federal operation. Belgal, a 28-year-old Dominican national, was shot after allegedly defying officers during a targeted arrest operation.
A City Hall spokesperson confirmed that Mamdani is reviewing the incident but plans to keep Tisch in her role. Scott Munro, president of the Detectives’ Endowment Association, also expressed support, citing Tisch’s effective management in reducing crime rates.
Mamdani and Tisch attended the New York City Police Memorial ceremony, honoring 42 deceased NYPD members, including victims of illnesses linked to the Sept. 11 attacks. They paid tribute to Detective First Grade Didarul Islam, killed in a mass shooting in Midtown Manhattan in 2025.
9/11 DEATH TOLL GROWING DECADES LATER
During the ceremony, Mamdani vowed to keep the memory of the fallen officers alive, emphasizing his commitment to their families. This week, he ordered a review of NYPD’s use-of-force policies, alongside announcing accountability reforms for misconduct allegations against officers.
