A North Carolina doctor faces serious charges after a road rage incident on Interstate 77 resulted in gunfire. The incident occurred on August 22, leaving two sisters, aged 12 and 20, wounded. According to Virginia State Police, Dr. Richard Thomas Arriviello, 61, was arrested following the allegations.
Police reports state that Arriviello, driving his Mercedes-Benz northbound, fired shots approximately three miles north of the North Carolina-Virginia state line. The gunfire struck both sisters in their legs while they were in a Jeep. Fortunately, their injuries were not life-threatening. Both were airlifted to a hospital for treatment.
Arriviello did not remain at the scene. He fled the area in his car, but state troopers stopped and arrested him about 15 miles away. He now faces multiple felony charges. These include malicious shooting into an occupied vehicle, causing bodily harm with intent to maim and using a firearm during a felony.
Arriviello is currently held without bond at the New River Valley Regional Jail. Court documents indicate he is scheduled to appear in court on September 29. However, the police have not shared what sparked the incident or if a firearm was retrieved from his vehicle.
The driver of the Jeep also received a citation for reckless driving, but officials did not disclose the driver’s identity.
Records from the North Carolina Medical Board show Arriviello has held a medical license for emergency medicine in the state since 2010. There are no public disciplinary actions noted against him. He owns Family Urgent Care in Monroe, North Carolina.
