New York Woman Charged with Supporting Palestinian Terror Group

A New York woman, Catherine Beth Washburn, has been arrested for allegedly leading a radical extremist group and providing funds to a Palestinian terrorist organization. Washburn, 37, from Irondequoit near Rochester, faces charges of attempting to support the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ), a recognized foreign terrorist organization. If found guilty, she could face up to 20 years in federal prison and a $250,000 fine.

The Justice Department identified Washburn as the leader of the Direct Action Movement for Palestinian Liberation (DAMPL). This organization emerged after the October 7, 2023, Hamas attacks on Israel. The federal complaint describes DAMPL as rejecting peaceful protest in favor of “direct action,” which includes property destruction and sabotage against entities linked to Israel.

The FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force reviewed communications where Washburn allegedly expressed hatred for Jewish people and wished for Israel’s destruction, saying, “I wish every day were October 7th.” She reportedly communicated with a person claiming to be a PIJ fighter in Gaza, expressing excitement over news involving the death of Israeli soldiers.

According to U.S. Attorney Michael DiGiacomo, Washburn’s actions were fueled by her intense dislike for Israel and Jewish people. Records indicate she executed about 80 cryptocurrency transfers, totaling over $30,000, to an account associated with the PIJ fighter. In November 2025, she allegedly joked about her activities potentially leading to lengthy prison sentences.

Coult Markovsky, FBI Counterterrorism Division Acting Assistant Director, stated that anyone who assists violent organizations will face consequences. He emphasized that the FBI, alongside the Justice Department, works diligently to prevent funding to terrorist groups and ensure accountability through the legal system.
