Canadian Reaction to U.S. Tariffs
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney described the steep new U.S. tariffs on Canadian goods as a serious “miscalculation.” This comment came after trade negotiations between Canada and the U.S. failed late on Friday. Carney attributed the breakdown to what he called the “uneconomic” and “unfair” demands from the Trump administration.
The 50% tariffs affect approximately $20 billion of imports from Canada, according to data from the U.S. Trade Representative’s Office. This includes items like hockey sticks, some building materials, liquors, and specific clothing types.
Carney stated that Canada is adopting a “focused response” by imposing retaliatory tariffs on U.S. products. These tariffs will target sectors such as steel, dairy, appliances, agricultural equipment, pulp and paper, and electronics. The measures are set to commence on September 8.
U.S. Perspective
The U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said during a Saturday morning Fox News interview that there are no plans for new trade discussions with Canada. He remarked, “We’ve said enough, and so we’ve taken countermeasures.” Greer also mentioned that the U.S. would respond to any Canadian retaliation.
