Federal law requires states to ensure that voters in national elections confirm, under penalty of perjury, their U.S. citizenship. However, a recent incident in New Jersey highlighted a flaw in maintaining this requirement.
Mikie Sherrill, the Governor of New Jersey, admitted to an error where 6,600 noncitizens were mistakenly registered to vote. Out of these, around 400 individuals actually voted. The governor acknowledged this significant lapse attributed to the previous administration led by Phil Murphy.
While it is commendable that the governor addressed the issue, legal consequences should follow for those who voted unlawfully. This incident, however, should not lead to federal control over state elections.
