Nationals Eye Stronger Future with Reliever Boost

When the Washington Nationals appointed Paul Toboni as their president of baseball operations on October 1, 2025, the 36-year-old anticipated a focus on acquiring minor league prospects leading up to his first trade deadline.

As the August 3 deadline nears in Washington D.C., Toboni’s plans remain uncertain. On June 29, he remarked, “I don’t know what we’re going to be thinking a month from now.” His Nationals are firmly in the race, standing at 43-43 and 2.5 games behind the St. Louis Cardinals and Miami Marlins for the final National League Wild Card spot. This is a notable achievement for a team that many predicted would finish last in its division for the sixth time in seven seasons.

Executives like Toboni balance optimism with realism, especially while observing team performance in the coming weeks. The Nationals field the youngest group of position players in MLB, underscoring this balance.

“We were pretty careful about not setting expectations too high or too low coming in to this,” Toboni said. “Just kind of see how it went with every passing day. I’ve been pretty vocal about it.”

The Nationals face a critical challenge with no established closer. Their bullpen shares the lead in losses in MLB, matching the Kansas City Royals with 22. Acquiring veteran relievers could allow Washington to reposition current top pitchers into less stressful roles, bolstering their strategy immediately.

Washington does not desperately need to replenish its farm system. The necessity lies in strengthening the bullpen, a move that might not require sacrificing their top prospects. With two of the top 42 picks in the upcoming July draft, the Nationals are in a strong position to consider acquiring relief assistance. Since winning the 2019 World Series, they haven’t returned to postseason play. Enhancing their bullpen now improves their chances significantly.
