Mitch McConnell Health Update: Senator Not Voting This Week

Kentucky Senator Mitch McConnell, at the age of 84, will not be voting on the Senate floor this week. His absence is due to ongoing recovery after an undisclosed hospitalization, as announced by his office on Monday.

The Republican senator was admitted to a hospital on Sunday, June 14, 2026. While his staff assures that he is receiving “excellent care,” the specifics of his medical condition and the reasons for admission remain confidential.

Despite his absence, the Senate schedule continues with critical budget discussions. McConnell’s office stressed that his legislative team is still executing his orders regarding federal matters and important initiatives for Kentucky.

“Senator McConnell is still working closely with staff on Senate business and Kentucky matters as he continues his recovery. However, he will not be voting this week,” stated his office.

The prolonged absence follows initial optimism from Republican leaders. Senate Majority Leader John Thune expressed hope for McConnell’s swift return, noting that the senator “sounded good” and stayed involved in legislative activities. Kentucky’s other senator, Rand Paul, indicated that McConnell is “doing better,” although he has not spoken with him directly.

McConnell’s medical leave adds to his recent health challenges, including a hospital stay in February due to “flu-like symptoms”. His public appearances have occasionally been marked by physical signs of strain, such as a bandaged hand during a May committee hearing. Additionally, a fall in 2023 led to a concussion and fractured rib, with subsequent brief freezing episodes during press events.

His recovery aligns with a significant period in his lengthy career. McConnell, who led Senate Republicans from 2007 to 2025, announced that he will retire when his term concludes in January 2027.
