Mississippi authorities have arrested a 51-year-old man following the homicide ruling in the death of Tasia Fortune, a 29-year-old Black mother of four. Fortune was found hanging from a tree behind an abandoned home. The arrest drew media and public attention due to Mississippi’s historical context of racial violence. The suspect, Jarques Ratliff, is a Black resident of Jackson with a prior connection to Fortune.
Jackson Police Chief RaShall Brackney announced the arrest during a news conference. Ratliff was detained on Capitol Street, Jackson, after officers executed search warrants at related properties. Chief Brackney emphasized the investigation is ongoing, and further arrest warrants are anticipated.
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez warned of ‘racial terror’ and ‘modern-day lynchings’ in the U.S., urging the Department of Justice to investigate the hanging deaths of Black Americans.
Fortune’s body was found on August 3 in a vacant property’s backyard on Road of Remembrance in Jackson. The medical examiner’s classification of the death as a homicide allowed the execution of search and arrest warrants for Ratliff. Chief Brackney noted that public and media scrutiny is significant but stressed the importance of relying on forensic evidence and facts.
No official suspects were named before Ratliff’s arrest. Social media reports claiming a 65-year-old man was a suspect were refuted. Police communication with Fortune’s family was prompt, with her mother, Christy Spivey, expressing gratitude for the police work. She firmly believed her daughter would not have taken her own life.
An online obituary describes Fortune as a Kentucky local and a cross-country star who relocated to Jackson a decade ago. She faced homelessness but was working to establish a cleaning business before her death.
Ratliff is now held at Hinds County Detention Center on a murder charge. Mississippi State Defender André de Gruy stated Ratliff will appear in Jackson Municipal Court soon for formal charges and bond conditions. More arrests may occur as investigations continue.
