Dan Campbell’s Encounter with Ditka

As a young player drafted to attend the combine, Campbell was set to meet with Ditka while he was with the New Orleans Saints. Known for his prowess both on the field and as a coach, Ditka was a figure Campbell admired during his youth.
“I got a great Ditka story,” Campbell began. He described entering a sparsely furnished room illuminated by a single lamp. The air was thick with cigar smoke, adding to the intimidating aura of the meeting. Campbell recalled it as one of the most “intimidating” yet significant experiences of his life.
Discussing his upbringing and outlook on football with Ditka, Campbell expressed deep admiration. “He’s a legend,” Campbell stated, extending his thoughts and prayers to Ditka’s family.
Jim Harbaugh’s Reflection on Ditka’s Generosity
Jim Harbaugh, drafted by Ditka in 1987 during his tenure with the Bears, reminisced about the coach’s unexpected kindness. While reviewing game plans in Ditka’s office, Harbaugh witnessed him writing checks in response to letters from people in need.
Upon inquiry, Ditka simply responded that he did not know the recipients personally. Harbaugh noted that Ditka never publicized these acts, reinforcing his character as a “great man.”
Ben Johnson’s Tribute to Ditka’s Legacy
Bears head coach Ben Johnson regarded Ditka as the “gold standard” for the organization. Extending condolences to Ditka’s family during his press conference, Johnson reflected on Ditka’s enduring impact as both a player and coach.
“He’s a legend around here,” Johnson commented. Ditka’s influence continues to be felt within the Bears organization, and Johnson expressed humility in occupying the same role Ditka once held.
