Republicans have a chance to seize a Michigan Senate seat held by Democrats since 1979. The race between former Representative Mike Rogers and Democrat Abdul El-Sayed is tight, with Election Day approaching on November 3. The seat is open due to Democratic Senator Gary Peters not seeking a third term. Historically, Democrats have held this seat since Carl Levin’s victory over Republican Senator Robert Griffin in 1978. Rogers could break a Republican losing streak, as the party has not won a Michigan Senate race since Spencer Abraham’s win in 1994.
El-Sayed leads slightly in recent polls, mostly within the margin of error. The Cook Political Report rates the contest as a Toss-Up. Both parties acknowledge its pivotal role in determining Senate control in January. Rogers nearly beat Senator Elissa Slotkin in 2024, giving him confidence in this race, boosted by President Donald Trump’s endorsement. El-Sayed, a progressive backed by Senator Bernie Sanders, narrowly defeated Haley Stevens in the Democratic primary.
Polls taken between late September and last weekend show El-Sayed leading, with margins ranging from 1 to 7 points. The latest InsiderAdvantage survey, conducted October 9-10, shows El-Sayed at 48% to Rogers’ 46%, with 5% undecided. Wedgewood Polls gave El-Sayed 53% to Rogers’ 47% among 607 likely voters.
Other polls reveal a narrow race. For example, Quantus Insights found El-Sayed at 48% to Rogers’ 47% among 744 likely voters polled October 5-6, while YouGov and Mitchell Research & Communications also reported close margins.
Significance of Michigan Senate Seat
Michigan fluctuates between parties at the presidential level but remains a Democratic stronghold in Senate races for nearly three decades. Rogers’ previous close race against Slotkin encouraged Republican support, including from Trump and Senate Majority Leader John Thune.
El-Sayed’s win in the Democratic primary led to a divided party coalition, as portions of the Jewish community expressed concerns over his past statements on Israel. Republicans launched a targeted campaign against him, highlighting his Muslim faith, which sparked criticism from both parties.
Debate Sparks Tensions
On October 8, Rogers and El-Sayed debated in Grand Rapids, aggressively exchanging views on Iran, tariffs, and immigration. Questions focused on El-Sayed’s stance toward Israel, while Rogers criticized El-Sayed’s ties to Hasan Piker, a controversial streamer.
El-Sayed is outspent nearly 2-to-1 on ads but counters with a busy travel schedule and media appearances. Democratic leaders like Governor Gretchen Whitmer and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez are rallying to support him. Former President Barack Obama will also join efforts in Detroit.
2026 Midterms and Senate Control
Republicans control the Senate 53-47, with Vice President JD Vance breaking ties. Democrats target seats in Maine, Ohio, and North Carolina for gains but need wins like in Michigan to meet or exceed a four-seat gain. A Rogers victory in Michigan would safeguard the Republican majority, even if they lose races elsewhere.
Absentee voting has started, and early in-person voting commences statewide in Michigan on October 24. Voters will ultimately decide the outcome on November 3.
