Ms. Kiros, an immigrant and first-time candidate, is set to progress to Congress within this deep-blue district of Colorado. Born just a year after Ms. DeGette, aged 68, initially assumed office, Ms. Kiros has now ended a 15-term incumbency. Her win almost guarantees her success in the upcoming November elections.
As both a lawyer and a doctoral student in public affairs, Kiros presented herself as an outsider in the political realm. She addressed the affordability crisis, which, she argued, the Democratic establishment had failed to resolve. A key approach of her campaign included her stance against U.S. support for Israel, which formed a central aspect of her political identity.
Running a grassroots campaign, Ms. Kiros managed to counter a fund-raising advantage held by Ms. DeGette. The incumbent enjoyed late-stage financial support from outside groups, yet Ms. Kiros maintained a lead by over five percentage points with nearly 80 percent of the votes counted.
In her campaign biography, Ms. Kiros emphasized her experience of being fired from a prominent Manhattan law firm in 2023.
