Former U.S. Women’s National Team star Megan Rapinoe recently addressed the issue of banning transgender athletes from women’s sports, describing such initiatives as attacks on women in society. During an interview on ABC’s “The View,” Rapinoe criticized the notion that these restrictions protect girls’ and women’s sports. She claimed opponents are using the topic to undermine women’s empowerment. “They’re going after trans people in sports, and they’re using this as a wedge issue because we love sports. And, you know, we don’t want our little girls to be unsafe in sports. And it’s like, ‘Unsafe from who? But okay,’” she said.

Rapinoe referenced a controversial bill in Washington, which mandates sex testing for female athletes. According to the House Republican Caucus, the Initiative IL26-638 aims to prevent ‘biologically male’ students from participating in female-only athletic activities by requiring healthcare provider verification.
Rapinoe criticized these efforts, claiming they attack women’s societal roles and confidence. She noted that sports involvement bolsters women’s confidence and that female participation in sports often correlates with leadership roles in business. She insists the real target is women’s societal empowerment.
In a Marie Claire article, Rapinoe stated that anti-trans legislation distracts from significant issues and harms women and girls. She pointed to historical participation of trans individuals in sports, suggesting that the current legislative focus detracts from more pressing matters.
