As the western region becomes increasingly dry, managing this shrinking water resource has posed significant difficulties. A final environmental impact statement released on Friday suggests cuts of up to 3 million acre-feet per year for the Lower Basin states. This reduction is significantly larger than the 1.6 million acre-feet per year proposed by the Lower Basin states themselves for the upcoming two years.
Arizona’s Department of Water Resources expressed concern over these potential cuts, stating that they “would devastate Arizona’s water users and its economy.” Nonetheless, the federal government has not yet detailed the anticipated specific plans for river management over the next two years. According to The Washington Post, the imminent two-year plan aligns more closely with the reductions proposed by the states for these years.
