A Madison police officer fatally shot a man who injured him with a knife during an arrest attempt. The incident led to widespread protests, with demonstrators marching to the state Capitol to demand accountability.
Footage of the shooting surfaced on social media, capturing three gunshots. Madison Police Chief John Patterson highlighted that the video offered only one viewpoint of the event. He expressed sincere condolences to the man’s family. The deceased, described as being in his 30s, has not been publicly named by law enforcement.
The confrontation occurred on a busy street in a neighborhood popular for its eateries, bars, and shops, located less than two miles from the state Capitol. Bystanders stopped to watch as the scene unfolded.
In a past incident in 2015 on the same street, a white officer shot Tony Robinson, a biracial man, resulting in protests. The district attorney did not press charges, declaring the officer’s actions justified. The races of both the officer and the recent shooting’s victim were not disclosed.
Black advocacy groups in Madison expressed their outcry, suspecting the victim was Black. Brandi Grayson, leader of Urban Triage, condemned the act as state violence, highlighting the anonymity of the victim.
On the scene, a crowd gathered, chanting for accountability and placing flowers and candles at the site of the shooting. As night fell, protestors advanced to the Wisconsin State Capitol, taking over a summer concert series venue to demand the officer’s identification and consequences for his actions. The Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra canceled its event in response.
The police had been addressing complaints about someone attempting to break into vehicles. Patterson reported that the suspect attempted to escape on a bicycle but was stopped by officers. During the struggle, he brandished a knife, injuring an officer. Despite the use of a taser, the suspect was shot by the officer he had attacked. The man later died in the hospital.
The officer who discharged his weapon is a seasoned veteran. He remains unnamed, with limited additional information provided. Another officer sustained unspecified injuries, while two others were unharmed.
The Wisconsin Department of Criminal Investigation will lead the probe since the case involves police officers. All four responding officers are on administrative leave under departmental policy.
