Loggerhead Sea Turtles Show Promising Nesting Season in Georgia

Loggerhead sea turtles are experiencing a significant surge in nesting activity on Georgia’s beaches. The turtles laid an impressive 4,174 nests, marking the highest number recorded in decades. This growth indicates a gradual yet consistent recovery for the species, which is categorized as threatened.

The recent nesting season on Tybee Island has been particularly noteworthy. A remarkable total of 59 nests were documented, surpassing the previous record of 35 nests. Sarah Alley, a biologist and curator with the Tybee Island Marine Science Center, described the experience as ‘exhausting, but definitely rewarding.’

A photograph captures Kris Williams Carroll, director of the Caretta Research Project, holding three loggerhead hatchlings discovered in a nest on Wassaw Island, Georgia, in July. This image illustrates the dedication and efforts involved in monitoring and protecting these fragile creatures during their nesting period.
