Libertyville’s Colten Siebert: A Leader in the Trenches

A Sense of Urgency

Eight months before the season opener, Libertyville lineman Colten Siebert felt compelled to make a difference. Standing at 6-foot-2 and weighing 255 pounds, Siebert had a promising junior season in his varsity debut, excelling at left guard and center. However, the Wildcats’ early exit from the Class 6A playoffs propelled him to aim higher. Siebert expressed his determination: “I told myself, ‘I want to be a captain and a leader on this team, striving to be the best player I can be.'” Together with his father, Siebert set out to fill the shoes of those who came before him, starting with relentless efforts in the weight room and guiding his teammates towards improvement.

Heading into the Regular Season Finale

With a six-game winning streak under their belt, Libertyville (6-2, 6-0) approaches the regular-season finale against Zion-Benton, having secured at least a share of the North Suburban Conference title. Siebert’s leadership was put to the test after starting the season with two losses; his proactive approach was crucial to the team’s turnaround. Following a defeat against Naperville North, Siebert and fellow captains convened a players-only meeting at Butler Lake Park to strategize for improvement. “We focused on finding solutions,” Siebert explained.

A Turnaround Victory

Libertyville’s victory over perennial contender Warren marked a turning point, overcoming the challenge despite interruptions due to lightning. Siebert emphasized, “We weren’t daunted by the prospect. We reaffirmed the team’s readiness.” Siebert’s dual role as a starter has helped solidify the Wildcats’ resilient identity, showcased in their hard-fought win against Lake Zurich. “We kept this game in focus all year, remembering last year’s loss,” Siebert reflected. “It was the most prepared we’ve been, and every yard mattered. Securing a conference title with a last-second touchdown is unforgettable.” His efforts off the field also contributed to the team’s winning culture.

Leading by Example

Libertyville coach Tim Budge praised Siebert, “He’s an anchor for our offensive line and a vocal leader.” Even small gestures, like organizing a celebratory photo for the linemen, highlight his dedication. With nicknames for each line, Siebert aims to ensure his position groups are well-prepared. After requesting to expand his responsibilities to include defense in the offseason, Siebert committed to mastering new techniques despite challenges. “Defense is unfamiliar to me,” he admitted, “but I’m determined to excel.” His mantra, “all gas, no brakes,” mirrors his commitment to games.

Statistics and Strategies

Siebert’s contributions in offense and defense have been pivotal. Offensively, his performance at left guard has driven the Wildcats’ offense beyond 1,000 rushing and passing yards, each supported by five players gaining over 100 yards. Defensively, Siebert’s transition to nose tackle led to impactful plays, resulting in 17 tackles, four for loss, and 1.5 sacks. He’s honed the technique of overcoming double teams, aiming to prevent opponents from reaching linebackers.

Team-First Mindset

Siebert remains steadfast in his commitment to team success, which is evident in his interactions during practice. “He pushes us to improve,” senior linebacker Mason Roe observed, “His passion is apparent, inspiring everyone around him.” Despite lacking individual accolades, Siebert finds satisfaction in contributing to the team’s achievements. “I’ve never chased individual stats,” Siebert stated, “My focus is on fulfilling my role for the team’s success.” His unwavering dedication is acknowledged by his coaches and teammates, embodying true leadership.
