Tabitha Wright and Ella Roye enjoyed their experience on the Downdraft ride at the Lake County Fair in Crown Point, Indiana. Although the ride was more intense than they expected, both girls found it fun. The Downdraft, with its spinning cars suspended 30 feet in the air, can appear daunting to some. Despite the thrill, Wright and Roye remained fearless and were thrilled to participate.
They were part of a group of visitors attending the opening day of the 174th Lake County Fair, which runs until August 16. The fair, a highlight of their summer, offers numerous attractions, including fried foods, carnival rides, and 4-H farm animals. Admission costs $8 for adults and children over 11, with free entry for younger children.
Jordan Wagner and her daughter Hayden traveled from Berrien Springs, Michigan, to present their sheep, Madonna, during the fair’s open show. Exhibiting animals is a family tradition for Wagner, and she expressed pride in her daughter’s efforts. Hayden, who has participated in multiple shows, showcases growth and dedication each year.
Lily Hamilton, another exhibitor, showed her cochin bantam chicken during the master showmanship class. Hamilton explained that showmanship focuses on the handler’s presentation rather than the animal itself. With nine years of experience in 4-H, Hamilton values friendships made through participation.
Fair attendees like Greg and Linda Smith appreciate the opportunity to view various animals. The Smiths, who have attended the fair for a decade, enjoy the tradition of visiting on opening day. Linda noted the joy of experiencing fair moments with her sisters and children.
Brett Walker and Heather Miller from St. John also embraced the fair’s closing of summer, accompanied by their children Damien and Dax. The family enjoys the engaging activities offered at the fair and the opportunity to connect with relatives, allowing the children to expend energy before school begins. Seeing their children’s happiness at the fair is a highlight for the parents.
