Justice Barrett Faces Criticism for Recent Court Decisions

Supreme Court Justice Amy Coney Barrett has recently attracted criticism from conservative voices following her votes in key legal decisions. She joined Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. and the court’s liberal minority in cases opposing the Trump administration’s objectives, including efforts to end birthright citizenship and restrict mail-in voting.

Justice Barrett’s decision on mail-in voting dismissed a push to curtail such practices, which have been unfoundedly blamed for former President Trump’s 2020 defeat. As a result of these decisions, Barrett has been described by some G.O.P. commentators as betraying Trump and the Republican Party’s agenda. Despite her record showing she was previously the most likely Republican-appointed justice to vote in the majority for liberal outcomes, this trend has not been observed in the current term.

Right-wing commentator Matt Walsh criticized Barrett in a social media post, claiming her appointment was similar to that of Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, the court’s only Black liberal justice. Additionally, Representative Nancy Mace of South Carolina called for Justice Barrett’s removal from the Supreme Court.

Removing a Supreme Court justice requires an impeachment process outlined by the Constitution, needing a simple majority vote in the House and a two-thirds majority vote in the Senate. Currently, Republicans lack the necessary votes in the Senate to proceed with such action.
