Talk show host Jon Stewart engaged in a conversation with New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani on his podcast, ‘The Weekly Show.’ They discussed the rise of democratic socialism within the Democratic Party. Stewart, recognized for his centrist Democratic views, pointed out the increasing trend of democratic socialist candidates gaining traction, necessitating discussions on their policies.
Stewart expressed concerns about some extreme policy ideas, such as abolishing prisons and borders, questioning whether these align with the values of order and security, which he considers progressive. He emphasized the importance of safety for all neighborhoods, regardless of resources.
Mamdani, inaugurated months ago, is noted for spearheading a wave of democratic socialists. Stewart asked Mamdani about his comfort level with some of these ideologies. Mamdani asserted that disagreement among socialists is natural and welcomed, as long as it leads to productive dialogue.
‘I’m comfortable with disagreement,’ Mamdani stated. ‘The key is to maintain conversations focused on delivering public safety without forcing New Yorkers to choose between safety and justice.’
Mamdani highlighted ongoing efforts with the police department, achieving historically low figures for murders and shootings. He also aims to close Riker’s Island and replace it with smaller borough-based jails, a move intended to address historical injustices.
Agreeing with Stewart, he stressed that safety should not depend on neighborhood wealth. Mamdani argued against after-the-fact definitions of safety, advocating for proactive investment to prevent violence.
